Swiss Amateur Theatre

Schappach, Beate; Kotte, Andreas Hans (19 October 2018). Swiss Amateur Theatre (Unpublished). In: Doppeltagung "Sharing Arts and Heritage" des National Centre of Expertise for Cultural Education and Amateur Arts und „Challenging the Local“ der NHL Stenden University of Applied Scienes in Leeuwarden / Niederlande. Leeuwarden / Niederlande. 18. bis 20. Oktober 2018.

The main characteristic of non-professional theatre in Switzerland is diversity. It comes in various forms and aesthetics and has different functions. Yet both academics and policymakers know very little about what the appeal of amateur theatre is or why so many people find it so valuable to their lives. The presentation sheds light on forms, functions, and values of Swiss amateur theatre. We present quatitative data and qualitative descriptions of non-professional theatre in Switzerland.
Our main research questions are:
− How does amateur theatre function in Switzerland?
− What societal functions does Swiss amateur theatre have?
− How can the relationship between amateur and professional theatre be described?
