Kleine und mittelgroße Städte entwickeln sich in Europa seit der Jahrtausendwende wirtschaftlich sehr positiv. Der Beitrag blickt auf die internationale wirtschaftsgeographische Forschung, die sich zunehmend mit diesem Städtetyp befasst. Nicht nur städtische Größe und somit Agglomerationsvorteile sind entscheidend, sondern andere Faktoren wie Vernetzung, Innovation und lokale Strategien.
