Boglione, Marcella (30 April 2018). Ritual Practices and Dynamics - New perspectives from Himera (Unpublished). In: Phil.-hist. Forschungstag. Bern. 30. April 2018.
Research in the Greek colony of Himera, carried out by the Institute of
Mediterranean Archaeology of the University of Bern since 2012, has yielded
two sanctuaries so far, that open a completely new horizon in the field of
sacred archaeology and votive offerings.
The target of this doctoral thesis aims to highlight both the analysis of the ritual
dynamics and actions in these sacred areas of Himera and the understanding of
the spaces dedicated to the rite.
With the study of the different material remains and the help of
archaeozoological and palaeobotanical investigations the ritual activities
become a reliable data for the discussion about social identity in an ancient
society and can be considered a cultural marker.
This poster will present a selection of the remains of a large number of ritual
practices excavated so far, which will exemplify the variety of these dynamics
with regard to their multiple and complex functions. What really defines a
deposition? Is it only the materials? What is the meaning of the absence (or
presence) of an object rather than another?
