Several times in his Refutatio of Epistula III Akindynos accuses Palamas of representing a "new" theology. Thus he takes up a heresiological argument established since Euseb of Caesarea, which goes back to the New Testament. On the other hand Akindynos also speaks positively of the renewal of man through God.
This contribution examines the following questions: In what exactly does Akindynos identify the novelty in the teaching of Palamas? By which rhetorical means does he stage the accusation of novelty? And how does he present himself as the keeper and defender of the ancient orthodox doctrine - against both, Palamas as well as Barlaam? Finally: How do the rejection of novelty in theology and the esteem of God's renewal of man relate to each other?
In the background is the question whether the controversy between Akindynos and Palamas as a whole must be understood as a dispute between a conservative and an innovative type of theological reasoning and what role reason and experience play in both.
