Social background is theoretically differentiated in a Bourdieuian framework. Our comparison between Germany and Switzerland illustrates the context sensitivity of the Bourdieuian types of capital. We use data from the German DJI Transition Panel and the Swiss Transitions from Education to Employment (TREE) dataset. We analyse post-compulsory educational and employment pathways, focussing on educationally disadvantaged adolescents. Results of our logistic regression models show context-sensitive effects of different types of capital at different points in time.
