This contribution analyses under which circumstances and against which obstacles children and adolescents in Switzerland obtain an upper secondary diploma - or fail to do so. The research results presented reveal a.) that the Swiss education system has a serious equity problem b.) that it systematically violates meritocratic principles and c.) thus reinforces the influence of social origin on educational success. The observed inequalities are aggravated by the fact that supply of education and training places in Switzerland on secondary education levels is de facto rationed.
