The first purpose of this contribution is to assess the type of substances used at age 23 based on the level of tobacco and/or cannabis use at age 17 among youths living in Switzerland. The second purpose is to measure to what extent youths with different consumption profiles move to other types of substance consumption during their transition from adolescence to young adulthood. Based on data of roughly 3000 youths of the TREE cohort surveyed between 2001 and 2007, we created consumption groups according to their use of tobacco and/or cannabis in 2001. The number ofindividual changes between groups was also assessed. Our results reveal three patterns: (1) the vast majoriry of abstainers in 2001 also abstained in 2007 and were less likely to change groups; (2) half of occasional cannabis users (not using tobacco) in 2001 were abstainers in 2007 and were the most likely to change groups, along with occasional users of both tobacco and cannabis; (3) those using tobacco (alone or combined with cannabis use) in 2001 were mainly also smoking in 2007, showing sizeable percentages of stayers in the same consumption group over time. Some gender differences were noted.
