Sport is considered to have a high potentialwith respect to social participation ofpeople with disabilities, in particular ininclusive settings. However, people withdisabilities continue to face social exclusionin sport, as they are underrepresented inorganized mainstream sport activities anddisability sport often remains separate. Thus, organized community sport can bothsupport and foster but also restrict or evenimpede social participation of people withdisabilities resulting in that the organizedsport’s contribution to social participationis also critically questioned. This articleprovides a systematic review of currentresearch on social participationof people withdisabilities in organized community sport inseparated and inclusive settings. The reviewof 25 relevant studies revealed four topicsbased on Koster and colleagues’ appliedtheoretical framework that are associatedwithsocial participation in organized communitysport: (1) social contacts, interactions andfriendships, (2) identity, self-perceptionand acceptance, (3) social support and(4) community integration. The resultsdraw a rather ambivalent picture of socialparticipation of people with disabilities inorganized communitysport. However, most ofthe studies showed positive social benefits topeople withdisabilitiesfor both separatedandinclusivesettingwithrespect tothe four topicsthat underscore the potential of organizedsport. However, there are also studiesreporting negative aspects people withdisabilities experienced, in particular whenparticipatingin inclusive settings. This articleconcludes by pointing to capacity buildingof disability and mainstream communitysport organizations in order to strengthenthe positive effects while minimizing andmitigating the negative effects to ensureeffective social participation of people withdisabilities.KeywordsDisability sport ·Sport club ·Social integration·Social inclusion
