Because of the "Hydrological Atlas", regional hydrology has considerably gained in importance in Switzerland. By this atlas, published in a first instalment in 1992, empirical knowledge resulting from regional hydrological studies is made available, in an attractive and legible form, for specialists as well as for a broader public. Illustrated by the maps discussed in the present article, reference to practice is emphasised.
