Daily flight missions of Swiss Air Force helicopter crews are demanding a high level of skills. Pilots have to manage a large range of tasks such as passengers and troops transportation, complex fight and rescue missions. Limited space conditions in cockpits, noise and vibrations of the turbines and the rotor are only a few of the different sources of stress pilots have to cope with. In hot summer days, high temperatures are an additional burden. Because of their impact on mental and physical performance, such high cockpit temperatures are relevant for the flight safety. The Swiss Air Force initiated this pilot study in order to investigate the effect of high cockpit temperatures on helicopter crews on their daily missions and to analyse the relation between different environmental temperatures on the human body.
