Neolithic and Early Bronze Age lakeside settlements in the northern Alpine foreland. Architecture, structure, and developments
The serial World Heritage Site “Prehistoric lake dwellings around the Alps” includes a selection of 111 of approx. 1000 known lake dwelling sites in six countries around the Alps (Germany, France, Italy, Austria, Slovenia, Switzerland) dating from the period between 5000 and 500 BC. The preservation conditions for organic material are extraordinarily good. Architectural elements of the wooden houses mainly come in the form of piles. In some cases, complete prehistoric villages and their construction histories can be reconstructed by means of dendrochronology (tree-ring dating). This paper gives an overview of settlement architecture and settlement layouts during the Neolithic period and the Early Bronze Age from the perspective of lakeside archaeology.
