Reflecting on our profession as Latin American historians in Switzerland, this article discusses two international development cooperation projects – in Peru and Ecuador – that were funded and/or designed by Swiss organizations. Through these case studies, we first examine the Swiss presence in the “development” of the Andes and the ways in which Alpine collaborators constructed and reproduced a neo-indigenista discourse. Second, we analyze the interlinkages between development projects and sectors of the progressive Catholic Church, looking at how ideals and ideas of “liberation” and “development” were negotiated.
