Being a father in a heterosexual family setting was not an uncommon experience for homosexual men, who typically came out, if they did, only after becoming fathers. Fatherhood and family played important roles for both homosexual men, who in interviews discussed their desire to start a family, and sexologists, who saw life in a heterosexual family as a “therapeutic” tool. This paper analyzes gay fatherhood in state-socialist Czechoslovakia and the GDR from these two perspectives of the individual’s experiences and subjective appropriations of fatherhood and family and of experts’ discourses.
