This chapter explores the gendered process of becoming a freedom fighter within the Kurdistan Liberation Movement (PKK). By asking why women join the guerrilla but more importantly what keeps them there, Käser complicates some of the dominant images of Kurdish female fighters, which often brush over complex histories of violence and resistance. Based on ethnographic research in Iraqi Kurdistan and engaging with theories on nationalism and feminism, Käser argues that the movement's identity-establishing ideology and its history hold great emancipatory power but also set out a clear framework of what liberation should look like.
