The present article focuses on opportunities which arise when psychotherapeutic and neuroscientific perspectives are combined. Grawes approach to neuropsychotherapy is presented as a potential framework for the combination of psychotherapy and neuroscience. This approach is then exemplarily enriched by recent neuroscientific research. One example is the paradigm of reconsolidation of (emotional) memory, which provides a neuroscientific vocabulary for describing psychotherapeutic working mechanisms, regardless of a given psychotherapeutic approach. Another example is drawn from the field of addiction, in which findings concerning subcortical alterations have motivated the development of new addons to relapse prevention therapy. Overall, we hope to demonstrate that neuroscience can not only contribute to explaining how psychotherapy might work, but can also inspire the development of new complementary treatment methods.
