Associations in the continuum
The concept of continuum of the vegetation holds well for a whole continent, although in smaller regions and in the field limits are visible. The associations therefore are not given by the nature, we can decide, how many we like to describe. For every great region, floristic regions for example, we can work out a list of accepted associations (between 100 and 400), what allows a good synopsis of the vegetation of this region. Other units may be described of course as subassociations, variants, facies or as communities of transition or succession. This limitation on the stage of the association allows the use of phytosociology for zoologists, nature protectionists, landscape planners etc.
