Exchanges of support between the generations of a family are fundamental aspects of the intergenerational relationship. Cultural norms and values and societal conditions influence the extent, balance and directionality of the support between the generations. In this study samples from three cultures which differ significantly with respect to their general values and duties of adult children and parents are compared: the Republic of Korea, Indonesia, and Germany. Based on the model of intergenerational solidarity by Bengtson, cultural differences and similarities with respect to relationship quality, family obligations, and the exchange of support were examined. A sample of about 100 dyads of adult daughters and their mothers was included in each country as part of the “Value of Children and Intergenerational Relationship”-Study. The frequency of instrumental, financial, and emotional support which adult daughters give to their parents, and parents give to their daughters were assessed. Furthermore, various aspects of the relationship quality and value orientations were measured. The results showed that daughters and mothers from Korea and Indonesia reported giving more financial and instrumental support than did the German participants. Also, mothers from the two cultures reported more emotional support. Differences in relationship quality and values did not explain the differences in social support. However, culture-independent as well as culture-specific relationships with social support occurred. The results are discussed from a culture-informed perspective on intergenerational relations.
