Digital humanities is still a relatively young target of research that spans the fields of the humanities and computing. This paper examines the interaction between digital humanities and archaeology and art history, and how the productive potential of a digital approach can be exploited to the advantage of both disciplines. The definition of the digital humanities, which is still under debate, is also addressed. I propose bracketing the disciplines by working out the common ground in practice-related applications. Although archaeology seems to be more related to scientific study than, for instance, to art history, both disciplines show that the generation of data and models fuels a need for debate that can advance interpretation and understanding. Digital approaches should therefore not consist of predefined renewal from outside, but must instead correspond to critically negotiated and grown norms and standards.
