(Request a copy)This chapter describes the basic concepts concerning vital reactions which are of value in daily forensic practice and for future research. The term vital reaction can be subdivided into vital reactions, vital processes and vital signs. Vitality and wound healing or wound-age estimation are phenomena which are closely related to each other, in particular with regard to skin lesions. In molecular pathology, the cell–cell interaction through bioactive molecules is an essential event during skin wound healing. A bone fracture can be caused by intrinsic and extrinsic factors or a combination of both. When determining the age of a bone fracture, these factors must be taken into account as well as the location and kind of fracture, because they can influence the healing procedure. Different causes of fracture lead to different kinds of fractures and at least various outcomes of healing process: traumatic fracture, fracture caused by seizure, fatigue fracture, and pathological fracture.
