Full text not available from this repository. The Old Catholic magazines Rheinischer/Deutscher Merkur and Der Katholik began publishing articles about the Armenian Catholics in the Ottoman Empire from 1870 onward. Their interest in the Armenian Catholics grew after the protest against the ultramontane policy of Pope Pius IX (1792-1878) in the Armenian Catholic Church since 1867. The Old Catholic magazines were important media for the establishment of a network between the Armenian Catholics in the Ottoman Empire and the Old Catholics in the German Empire and in Switzerland. These magazines supported and legitimized the Armenian Catholic claims on their ecclesial rights from a western liberal Catholic perspective. Furthermore, the magazines are significant archival holdings with numerous critical historical evidence. Finally, Deutscher Merkur and Der Katholik play a vital role in the self-perception of the Armenian Catholic and the Old Catholic ecclesiastical traditions.
