In Indonesia, about one quarter of deforestation is directly attributable to oil palms. Seldom highlighted in connection with this is the role of oil mills. Many currently operate well below their capacity – and are hungry for more oil palm fruits. This increases the risk of further deforestation. The extent to which the mills drive forest loss and the role they could play in achieving more sustainable production are the subject of a recent master’s thesis at CDE and the Institute of Geography of the University of Bern. |
