Saccate (= vesiculate) pollen is non-wetable and floats for a longer time than other pollen types. It is therefore often overrepresented in littoral accumulations. This may cause difficulties in interpreting oscillating pollen curves. But it may also be useful (1) to estimate the period of terrestrialisation of a basin, (2) to detect hiatuses and (3) to reconsider pollen-zone boundaries that were based on crossings of pollen curves if one of the pollen types is saccate.
