This article focuses on how exposure to different media genres relates to different types of attitudes towards Muslims and Islam in Switzerland. We distinguish between attitudes towards Islam as a religion, attitudes towards Muslims living in the same country and the opinion on banning the burqa in the public space. The analysis is based on a representative online survey conducted in Switzerland. We show that not all types of attitudes are equally associated with exposure to different media genres. Attitudes towards Muslims living in Switzerland are more negative among recipients consuming mass-market news as compared to those consuming upmarket news, both in terms of newspaper and television. Anti-Islam attitudes are found to be associated with reading both tabloids and quality newspapers. Positioning towards a veiling ban is directly related to the consumption of quality newspapers and exposure to public and commercial television, but is only indirectly related to reading tabloids.
