Commonly known as the “Grand Tour”, the scientific, artistic and cultural journey
through Italy is the subject of plenty of historical research. In France, too, many schol-
ars have analysed the phenomenon, often focusing on the experiences and observations
made by the many writers who travelled the peninsula and left literary texts and accounts
of their journeys. The list begins with Montaigne, Charles de Brosses, continues in the
nineteenth century with Chateaubriand, Stendhal, Germaine de Stael, etc., and contin-
ues to the present day. The expression “The Temptation of Venice” has become a symbol
of escape from French reality!
This report is part of a working project and aims, through the filter of 19th century
French writers alone, to give an initial insight into their contacts with the Italian world
of pharmacy, medicines and, more commonly, health. It will deal with methodology,
heuristic material and will give, with a few examples, an idea of the opportunities that
such a design can open up for the culture and sociology of pharmacy, in Italy, but also
elsewhere in Europe. It will also give an insight into some Italian pharmacies which were
particularly valued by cultured tourists, the cities of Rome, Venice and Florence appear-
ing among the most frequent destinations.
