This research identifies gender rules in 7 nations and examines how they align with social status. Results showed that men’s prescriptions align with high and women’s proscriptions with low status in all nations. Paradoxically, the more gender equal a nation, the more strongly men’s prescriptions align with high status. These insights are important to tackle persisting gender inequalities.
