This essay looks at how the study document “Christian perspectives on theological Anthropology” (Faith and Order Paper 199, 2005) constructs an approach to human vulnerability as the unfulfilled side of the human as image of God. It questions the identification of vulnerability with seen, touched, relational and embodied “brokenness”. Furthermore, it challenges the claim that brokenness, as instantiated in the arguments of the document, gives full account of human vulnerability. I argue that to be vulnerable is more than to be broken or breakable, and that it pertains to what it is to be an image of the suffering, crucified and resurrected Christ.
