Aims: To study patterns of consumption and specific characteristics of binge drinkers and cannabis users. Method: Through telephone interviews, 2,842 young adults were assessed. Results: In the month prior to the interview, 40 % of the young adults drank alcohol to intoxication and/or used cannabis. Two-thirds of those interviewed were only binge drinkers or only cannabis users. Both binge drinking and cannabis use were associated with hedonistic tendencies and risktaking. A high frequency of use was additionally associated with stresscand little awareness of healthy behaviours. Male binge drinkers did not differ from male cannabis users. Among women, risk taking was associated with infrequent cannabis use, and stress was associated with binge drinking. Conclusions: Only among women were specific characteristics associated with frequency of use.
