This entry discusses key trajectories and themes pertaining to the development, consolidation, and transformation of the
Roman Empire in temperate Europe. First, a chronological overview (200 BCe500 AD) by region is given: this includes Gaul
and the Germanies; temperate Iberia; The Eastern Alps and the Danube provinces as well as Britain. In the case of the
Germanies, the Danube provinces and Britain, areas outside of direct Roman rule are also included. In the last section,
a selection of current research themes and key issues is presented.
