Although theoretical models, such as the Transtheoretical Model (TTM) explain a respectable amount of exercise behavior, there is still a significant amount of unexplained variance in exercise behavior. This investigation examined if including sport participation motivations improves the explanation of exercise behavior beyond the TTM. Adolescents (n=819; age=14.99, SD=1.22; 51.28% male) were approached for a three-year follow-up of TTM variables, sport participation motivations and reported exercise. Survey completers (n=400; age=17.62 years, SD=1.18; used for this study) did not differ from non-completers, except that more females completed the follow-up (54.75% vs. 43.68% female, respectively, p<.003). Path and regressions analyses revealed that sport participation motivations did not add to the explanation of exercise behavior above the TTM. Continued investigation attempting to improve the explanation of exercise behavior is warranted.
