Many prehistoric, roman and medieval objects were discovered between 2003 and 2010 on the Schnidejoch, a pass of the Western Bernese Alps, at 2756 m of altitude, at the frontier between the cantons of Berne and Wallis. The high temperatures of summer 2003 caused the cast of a small field of ice and setting in light the archaeological remains. Research was programmed following data provided by hikers. The objects made of organic matter (wood, bark of birch, leather, vegetable fibres) allowed obtaining about fifty radiocarbon dates; they indicate the use of the pass between the half of the 5th millennium BC and 1000 AD. Moreover, the series of dating suggest the alternation of periods of feasibility and inaccessibility of the pass. Schnidejoch is currently the oldest testimony of the crossing of the Alps, connecting the Bernese Oberland through the Simme and the Rhone valleys.
