Urinalysis including dipstick tests and urinary microscopy represent a non-invasive, technically simple and economic screening tool. Notably, the repetitive detection and analysis of hematuria and proteinuria harbors a high sensitivity for detection of renal and systemic diseases. Due to its semiquantitative nature, urinalysis should only be interpreted after comprehensive consideration of diagnostic and technical limitations, which will be reviewed in this article.
