The change in metabolism during the transition from ammonia to nitrate nutrition and the inverse results in changes in pool sizes for nitrate, ammonia, α-amino nitrogen and malate. In the change from ammonia to nitrate medium the cellular nitrate pool immediately increases. The reduction of nitrate begins later. In the change to ammonia, ammonia is immediately taken up and incorporated into amino acids.
