Die epidemiologische Zunahme der morbiden Adipositas hat in den letzten Jahren zu einem deutlichen Anstieg bariatrischer Operationen weltweit geführt (Buchwald H; Obes Surg 2014; 24:1126), welche neben einer nachhaltigen Gewichtsreduktion auch eine effektive und langfristige Remission von assoziierten Komorbiditäten (z. B.: Diabetes mellitus Typ II, Bluthochdruck, metabolisches Syndrom, obstruktives Schlafapnoesyndrom) ermöglichen (Sjostrom L;N Engl J Med 2007; 357:741).
