In order to promote the teaching competence of university lecturers, a wide range of training courses, often interdisciplinary, have been established in Germany over the last decades. The need for subject-related teaching methodology programs for university teachers is increasingly taken into account. In order to structure and standardize these across medical faculties, the work group on faculty development within the Bavarian competence network for medical education (Kompetenznetz Medizinlehre Bayern) developed the three-level Bavarian Universities’ Certificate of Medical Didactics (Zertifikat Medizindidaktik der Bayrischen Universitäten), its structure resembling that of the Universität Bayern e.V. ProfiLehrePlus certification program.
This Certificate of Medical Didactics was developed and agreed in a multi-stage reconciliation process by all Bavarian medical faculties’ student affairs deaneries. The approach described in this paper could serve as a model for other academic specialist areas also attempting to establish certification programs.
The certificate at its basic level, giving proof of essential academic teaching competence, is currently being adopted by all Bavarian medical faculties’ postdoctoral promotion (Habilitation) regulations as minimum requirement. This promotes the value of teaching and the necessary didactic qualification of medical teachers.
