The study presents the research carried out on the pile dwellings on Lake Bienne from the earliest descriptions in the 18th century. The search for objects in the lake occurred during the 19th century, enabling important collections to be built up. A compilation of all knowledge on the subject was only published at the start of the 20th century. The creation of a cantonal archaeological service in 1970 led to serious excavation and the inventorying of the lakeshore settlements.
