Teaching involves a wide variety of tasks, many of which are quite challenging as they are strongly interwoven with moral values and ethical aspects. The moral dimension contributes largely to the attractiveness of this profession. Still, while teachers predominantly experience positive emotions and high levels of job satisfaction throughout their professional careers, they might also suffer from the sometimes stressful requirements of this occupation. This chapter contributes to the question of whether or to what extent teachers’ sense of professional ethics can be regarded a major driver or inhibitor to their positive emotions, job satisfaction and occupational health. We discuss why teachers’ skills to sense and morally reflect their professional behaviour can be considered both a blessing and a curse with regard to their job satisfaction. We conclude with a theoretical model on moral stress and health in the teaching profession and give an outlook on options to foster teachers’ health and prevent teacher burnout.
