While the last fifty years saw remarkable advancements in biblical exegetical approaches that use comparatively visual data, the practice is still prone to asymmetries. First, while verbal and non-verbal codes are well-addressed, the objects’ material qualities and contexts are often overlooked. Secondly, while methods have their premises exhaustively discussed on logical grounds, their assumptions and reliance on contemporary paradigms are hardly discussed. Thirdly, while it is widely known that interartistic comparisons are inclined to subjectivities, the subject-researcher and their academic cultures are not assessed. This article argues that these asymmetries are to some extent the result of an “image-text” divide that shapes and informs comparisons. Therefore, this text exposes these asymmetries and sketches a multidimensional approach to overcome them.
