Full text not available from this repository.The essay proposes an analysis of the strategies that Primo Levi deployed in the construction and representation of the character of Gerhard Goldbaum which recurs in a delimited narrative segment in Levi’s work. His name first appears in "Il sistema periodico" (Goldbaum is among the deportees who had worked with Levi at Auschwitz-Monowitz in the Buna laboratory and whose name is evoked in Vanadio by the German chemist Dr. Müller), but the actual figure of Goldbaum will take shape later in the short story "Un «giallo» del lager" (1986). The study of this character contributes to the deepening of the complex relationship established in Levi’s later work between narrative, historical facts, and testimonial writing. Among other things, it involves the use (and free manipulation) of the correspondence between Levi and the Germans.
