Rzitki, Aldona (14 August 2023). The controversial influence of multilingualism in older adults. (Unpublished). In: Summer School of Linguistics 2023. České Budějovice, Czech Republic. 11 to 20 August.
The goal of the poster presentation will be to present my Ph.D. work. It aims to show how multilingualism affects individuals in old age. The focus will be on the linguistic factors and whether they influence the cognitive competencies of the participants. 20 German-Polish bilingual individuals in Germany who are at least 50 years old will be recruited. They will complete a detailed questionnaire and screenings for executive functions such as the SEF and the MMST, among other test batteries. In addition, tests that survey different areas of executive functions are to be completed. In particular, tasks will be used in which current studies assume multilingual persons would have an advantage. This would include, for example, inhibition tasks, which can be assessed with the Stroop Task. In addition, language proficiency will also be evaluated using language proficiency tests, self-assessments, and narrative and picture description tasks. The language biographical situation, language level, cognitive competencies, and executive functions of the test persons will be collected in detail. In addition, a qualitative content analysis of the experienced multilingualism in old age will be collected based on the questionnaire, which will be compared with these results.
