In this study, the Stroop test is used to investigate the cognitive protective effects of multilingualism on inhibition by collecting data from German and German-Polish individuals affected by dementia (n=19). For comparability of results, a language proficiency test (Gagarina et al. 2010) and a screening for executive functions are also conducted (Lubitz/Niedeggen 2018). A descriptive analysis shows that the multilingual subjects perform better on the Stroop test than the monolingual comparison group despite higher cognitive deficits. The results support the assumption that the positive effect of longstanding multilingualism promotes a longer conservation of inhibition skills.
