Trainee programmes have been widely adopted for acquiring and fostering young talent (such as university graduates) in German-speaking companies. For decades, trainee programmes have been dominantly operated in large companies in Germanspeaking
countries, but recently they have spread among SMEs and public firms. This study analyzes the status quo and case study with regard to talent management through trainee programmes in German-speaking countries. On the basis of the analysis, the key characteristics of talent management through trainee programmes are identified and the crucial implications for Korean companies are suggested. Main characteristics of trainee programmes adopted as a tool for talent management in German-speaking companies include strategic integration into human resource development system, project work, focus on the importance of personality of trainees, development of systematic process with mid-term period, active involvement and support of management, mentoring programmes, and staying abroad.
In order to introduce the talent management through trainee programmes, which have already been spread across German-speaking companies, Korean companies are required to foster personality of trainees, change company culture, introduce strategic human resource management, have a strong involvement of management, build up the mentoring system, etc. Furthermore, in order to activate the talent management through trainee programmes in SMEs, this study emphasizes the need for support of the Korean government.
