In this paper, I will explore the role of media in the production of religious commitment drawing on the example of Jehovah’s Witnesses. I will argue that, while providing important insight in the relationship between media interpretation (Mediendeutung) and media use (Mediennutzung), the concept of “socio-religious shaping of media” (H. Campbell) risks to produce an excessively static picture of an interpreting community. To outline a more dynamic conception of religious communities – one that combines the idea of a strong collective commitment with a measure of individual agency – I will introduce a theoretical framework derived from speech act theory (J.L. Austin) and the philosophy of collective intentionality (J. Searle). In particular, it sketches a frame for the analysis of Jehovah’s Witnesses, in their relationship with media, as members of a “plural subject” (M. Gilbert).
