This article reconsiders the controversial role of ,poetics‘ in the Old High German glosses of the Murbach Hymns (MS Junius 25). Its methodical perspective relies on Roman Jakobson’s idea of ,poetic function‘, conceived as a projection of paradigmatic features onto the syntagmatic axis of linguistic expression. Special emphasis is given to figures of repetition occurring on the pages of the manuscript, such as double glosses, referring to the paradigmatic level, and phonetic recurrences, referring to the syntagmatic level of language.
