This contribution clarifies the interdependences between the reactions in Australia to the Dublin Easter rising in April 1916, the negotiations of Prime Minister William Morris Hughes to sell Australian primary produce to the Imperial government between March and November 1916, the impact of climatic conditions in other parts of the world throughout the year on these negotiations as well as the attempts to keep the Hughes government in power at almost all costs by the end of 1916. The contribution shows how essential climatic conditions in other parts of the world were for the success Hughes had after his defeat in the 1916 conscription-referendum to sell primary produce at such prices as to win back the farmers vote in the 1917 election, which kept him in government and Australia in the war.
