Background: Pancreatic cancers take their origin from exocrine and endocrine components of the pancreas, less frequently from fibrovascular tissues.
Methods: In the present review, emphasis is placed on tumors of the exocrine apparatus covering more than 90% of pancreatic neoplasms.
Results: Predominant tumor types are discussed with respect to their morphology and their clinical relevance, and rare neoplastic lesions are briefly presented. In addition, factors involved in pancreatic carcinogenesis are reviewed.
Conclusions: The pathomorphology offers hints for the prognosis, the knowledge of possible carcinogenic factors may prevent pancreatic cancer in future.
