Waterhouse, Elizabeth Neumann (25 October 2017). Dancing Together in William Forsythe’s "Duo" (Unpublished). In: Dancing Together Workshop. ITW, University of Bern. October 25-26, 2019.
Based upon my background as a former Forsythe dancer and extensive research of the duet practice of dancers performing William Forsythe’s choreography "Duo" from 1996-2016, my dissertation considers this piece in which dancing together is seminal. I ask: What are the terms that articulate the dancers’ sense of togetherness in "Duo"? What is the choreography that they enact? How do we, as dance scholars, gain access to the phenomenon of dancing, in order to answer such questions? It this presentation I give an overview of my sources, working methods and concepts. I describe the means that I have developed to triangulate ethnographic methodology and video analysis, to articulate aspects of the performers’ experience and trace the longitudinal changes of Duo across its history. With reference to Alfred North Whitehead’s process philosophy, in which both togetherness and abstraction play an important role, I argue that my approach can be considered, more generally, as providing insight into how both dancers and scholars enact choreography.
