Änneli, gimer es Müntschi – The use of Bernese Swiss German inofficial personal names in the complete works of Jeremias Gotthelf

Bernese Swiss German is one of many Alemannic variations spoken in Switzerland. This variation was mainly examined in the 20th century through the Atlas of German speaking Switzerland (cf. Hotzenköcherle et al. 1962-2003). Since then, only very specific factors of this particular linguistic variety have been examined, e.g. Hodler 1969 on Bernese German syntax, Marti 1976 on Bernese German grammar more generally or Siebenhaar 2000 on social varieties in the city of Bern. Research on Bernese Swiss German inofficial personal names hasn't been included in any study until the present day, but is now element of a PhD project (cf. Heer: forthcoming).
Due to the lack of systematic studies in anthroponomastics in Switzerland, it is our goal to conduct a first pilot study, which examines inofficial personal names in Bernese Swiss German.
As generally known in onomastics, personal names are divided into two groups, the official and the inofficial names (cf. Nübling et al. 2012: 172 and Debus 1987: 52-73). Spillner (2016: 31) assumes that the use of official and inofficial names depends on the social context in which the name is used. Inofficial names are used in specific communities, eg. in sport clubs, in music bands, in school classes a.s.o. Because of this fact, we have chosen the literary work of Jeremias Gotthelf (1797-1854), an author who usually describes Swiss village communities in the 19th century. It is our aim to analyse the used names in respect of social and linguistic factors and to present first results at this conference.
