Developing and implementing internal corporate venturing (ICV) activities has become a major challenge for many firms. Joint efforts of internal corporate venture teams (ICVT) are inevitable to accumulate a great variety of needed skills and expertise by assembling individuals from different organizational units. Operating independently from the normal decision-making criteria allows ICVTs to rapidly explore new business opportunities. However, despite the prevalence of ICVTs we know little about which inputs, mediators and outcomes are the most relevant in the context of ICVTs. Thus, our review addresses the question of what are the success factors of ICVTs. To synthesize extensive research, we conduct a systematic literature review, which yields in a final sample of 90 quantitative studies. To portray our findings we rely on an Input-Mediator-Outcome (IMO) framework. Our review reveals that functional diversity is the most frequently studied ICVT input, whereas team learning and new product financial success are focal ICVT mediators and outcomes. In this review, we also discuss some controversies. For example, although diversity of functional expertise is seen as key, the majority of authors conceptualizes the construct as the distribution of functional roles instead of examining the breadth and depth of team members’ functional expertise. Further, scholars focus predominately on explaining positive outcomes, even though project failure is rather the rule than the exception.
