The main purpose of this contribution is to look at the concept of linguistic
complexity from a sociolinguistic point of view. After discussing some general aspects of the concept and in particular Trudgill’s proposal that the fundamental complexity of languages originated in small communities, having with few contacts
with other communities and which were characterized by a high internal cohesion,
we consider two examples of cyclical linguistic changes: Jespersen’s cycle of negation and the cycle of avere. These two examples are used to assess the role that can be attributed to the concept of complexity in linguistic changes and to investigate the relationship between complexity and sociolinguistic phenomena.
