Investigating the relationship between reaction time and intelligence by different fixed-links models.

By fixed-links modelling, variance of reaction times (RTs) in a Hick task can be separated into a latent variable (LV) representing processing speed unaffected by task demands (constant factor loadings) and a LV representing the increase of RTs across task conditions (increasing factor loadings). We investigated whether the relationship between intelligence and these two LVs in 312 participants depended on the specific trajectory of factor loadings on the increasing LV. The Hick task contained a 0-bit, 1-bit, 2-bit, and 2.58-bit condition. In five models with different increasing trajectories, model/data fit, but not the relationship between the LVs and intelligence, depended on the specific trajectory. The constant LV was unrelated to intelligence in all models. The relation between intelligence and the increasing LV varied from r=-.32 to r=-.42. Thus, the choice of fixation effectively influences the model fit, whereas the relation between the LVs and intelligence is only marginally affected.
